Deen House 303 – CFRP Structural Strengthening & Building Rehabilitation
Grace Chemicals carried out structural retrofitting and building rehabilitation works at Deen House 303, Lahore, combining CFRP carbon fiber laminate strengthening with specialized waterproofing and moisture-control systems to improve structural performance and long-term durability.
PROJECT DETAILS
Deen House 303 required an integrated rehabilitation approach addressing both structural strengthening and moisture-related deterioration. The structural strengthening scope involved CFRP carbon fiber laminate strips installed according to the structural engineer's recommendations, together with surface preparation, structural epoxy bonding and temporary load-bearing support.
The building also exhibited moisture-related deterioration including damaged plaster, efflorescence, salt contamination and water penetration through wall surfaces, requiring specialized waterproofing and rehabilitation treatments.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
The Deen House 303 project in Lahore involved specialized structural retrofitting and rehabilitation works undertaken to improve the performance and durability of the existing structure.
Grace Chemicals implemented a CFRP carbon fiber laminate strengthening system in designated structural areas following engineering recommendations. The work included substrate preparation, temporary load-bearing support, application of structural epoxy adhesive and installation of CFRP laminate strips.
Alongside the structural strengthening works, the building required treatment of moisture-affected wall areas where deterioration, efflorescence, salt contamination and water ingress had affected the existing finishes and masonry substrate. A comprehensive waterproofing and wall rehabilitation system was therefore incorporated as part of the overall building rehabilitation approach.
PROJECT CHALLENGE
The existing building presented a combination of structural strengthening requirements and prolonged moisture-related deterioration.
Certain structural areas required additional strengthening in accordance with the structural engineer's design, while internal and external wall surfaces showed signs of plaster deterioration, debonding, efflorescence, salt contamination, cracking and moisture penetration.
The moisture assessment indicated that water was entering from exposed external surfaces and travelling through pores and micro-voids within the wall system, resulting in dampness and deterioration on internal surfaces.
The waterproofing assessment specifically recorded plaster deterioration, exposed masonry, efflorescence, capillary moisture movement, external cracks and previously failed repair areas. revised and final Deen House Wa…
SOLUTION & SCOPE
Grace Chemicals adopted an integrated structural strengthening and building rehabilitation approach.
CFRP Structural Strengthening
The designated structural areas were prepared by removing existing finishes and unsuitable surface material to achieve a sound bonding substrate. Temporary load-bearing jacks were installed where required to support the structure during strengthening works.
A structural epoxy adhesive was then applied to the prepared substrate, followed by installation of Grace Chemicals' CFRP carbon fiber laminate strengthening system in accordance with the structural engineer's recommended layout.
The CFRP laminates used for the strengthening scope were approximately 1.2 mm thick and 4 inches wide. Temporary support was maintained during the required bonding and curing period.
Waterproofing & Wall Rehabilitation
Damaged and contaminated plaster was removed to expose a stable substrate. The surface was cleaned and prepared before application of specialized salt-treatment and waterproofing systems.
The proposed rehabilitation system included ESCO-FLUAT for treatment of soluble salts and efflorescence, AQUAFIN F pressure injection where DPC restoration was required, AQUAFIN 1K as a cementitious waterproofing barrier and AQUAFIN 2C as a flexible secondary waterproofing layer.
Replastering and subsequent protective treatments were incorporated to improve durability and resistance against recurring moisture ingress.
COMPLETION / RESULT
The rehabilitation works provided an integrated solution for both structural strengthening and moisture-related deterioration at Deen House 303. The CFRP strengthening system enhanced the designated structural elements without introducing significant additional dead load, while the waterproofing and rehabilitation treatments addressed deteriorated and moisture-affected building surfaces.
The project demonstrates Grace Chemicals' capability to combine modern structural retrofitting technologies with specialized waterproofing and building rehabilitation systems within an existing structure.
